Set in mid-20th century America, The Brutalist follows the journey of László Tooth, a Jewish architect from Hungary. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1947, he faces initial poverty before securing a contract with questionable investors. Co-written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, the screenplay features a talented cast, including Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and Joe Alwyn. Notably, select theaters will present the film in stunning 70mm prints.
Brady Corbet’s Vision and Challenges
Corbet, known for directing the critically acclaimed Vox Lux, recently discussed the financial struggles encountered during the production of The Brutalist. He acknowledged, “We’re not reinventing the wheel.” Furthermore, he expressed a desire for a larger budget, stating it would have alleviated some stress. The director also shared his personal challenges, revealing that sleepless nights over the past seven years were part of the struggle to bring this “malnourished” project to life.
Primarily filmed in New York, The Brutalist also took advantage of locations in Hungary, where production costs are more manageable. Corbet explained, “While Hungary isn’t the cheapest, it is certainly more affordable than New York City.” He highlighted the staggering $1 million spent on transportation for his previous film as a stark contrast.
Accolades and Anticipation
Corbet’s direction has already received accolades, including the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. Additionally, The Brutalist made a significant impact at the New York Film Festival, generating excitement for its release.
