Today to Streamlined Operations “Amazon Ends Same-Day Delivery”

In a recent announcement, Amazon revealed plans to discontinue its same-day delivery service, known as Amazon Today. This service, which enabled fast deliveries from physical retailers, will gradually shut down. Sources indicate that further development of the service has been halted. Most elements of Amazon Today are expected to cease operations by December 2. However, select retail partners will continue fulfilling orders until January 24, 2025. As a result of this transition, some employees will face layoffs, while others may find new roles within the company. During a recent meeting, employees connected to Amazon Today learned about these significant changes. Initial reports suggested that around 300 employees worked on this service, but Amazon later clarified that the actual figure is closer to 175.

Cost-Cutting Measures Amid Changing Market Dynamics

This closure aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to cut costs. CEO Andy Jassy has been prioritizing operational efficiency in light of shifting market conditions. Since 2022, the company has enacted layoffs totaling over 27,000 jobs as Jassy has targeted projects viewed as unproven or excessively costly. Previously canceled initiatives include a telehealth service and a children’s video-calling device. Launched in 2022, Amazon Today aimed to provide quick delivery from partner retailers in urban areas. Using contracted Flex drivers, Amazon sought to deliver products to customers within hours. Despite the intended speed improvements, Amazon is continuing to enhance its facilities for same-day deliveries.

Retaining Focus on Fast Delivery Options

While Amazon Today is winding down, the company is still expanding its delivery capabilities. Competing against services like Instacart and Door Dash, Amazon is diversifying its delivery offerings. Retailers such as Office Depot, Staples, Petco, PacSun, GNC, and Fable tics partnered with Amazon for this initiative. Amazon assures these retailers that it will ensure a smooth transition during this process.

The decision to close Amazon Today has surprised many, particularly as the company was actively onboarding new retailers.  These routes were less efficient, making them less attractive to Flex contractors.

Despite these changes, Amazon remains committed to investing in faster delivery options for customers. The company continues to adapt its strategies to meet the evolving demands of the market. Amazon Ends Same-Day Delivery
